Your local masonry contractor mixes up a thick bed of standard grey cement and river sand, slaps the heavy slabs down, and polishes them. The floor looks like a seamless glass mirror.

A few weeks later, the Trivandrum summer heat peaks, and a massive hairline crack violently shoots straight across the middle of your most expensive tile. 1. The Physics of "Popping" (Why Cement Fails)
The Traditional Method: For decades, masons laid small ceramic tiles on a thick, wet bed of standard cement mortar.
The Modern Failure: Standard cement requires air to cure properly. When you place a massive, dense 8x4 foot porcelain slab over wet cement, the moisture is completely trapped in the middle. The edges dry quickly, but the center stays wet.
The Shear Force: As standard cement eventually dries, it physically shrinks. When the Kerala climate heats up your concrete floor, the concrete expands. If the rigid cement cannot handle this microscopic pushing and pulling (shear stress), the bond violently snaps. The Dirt Trap: White cement and standard cement-based grouts are highly porous. Within two months, spilled coffee, dirty mop water, and dust will permanently stain the grout lines black, creating an ugly grid pattern across your beautiful floor.
